Terjebak 6 Hari, 29 Penambang Tewas

VIVAnews - Semua 29 pekerja yang terjebak di sebuah pertambangan batu bara di Selandia Baru dikhawatirkan tewas setelah ledakan besar kedua terjadi pada Rabu, 24 November 2010. Mereka terperangkap di terowongan sejak Jumat pekan lalu, juga akibat ledakan besar.
“Dengan menyesal, saya mengumumkan kepada rakyat Selandia Baru bahwa pada pukul 2.37 hari ini terjadi ledakan besar di bawah tanah, dan berdasarkan besarnya ledakan, diperkirakan tidak akan ada yang bisa selamat,” ujar juru bicara kepolisian Selandia Baru, Gary Knowles, seperti dikutip kantor berita Associated Press.
Ledakan pertama terjadi pada Jumat, 19 November 2010, di Pertambangan Pike River. Sebanyak 29 penambang terjebak di dalam tambang tersebut. Usaha penyelamatan dipersulit oleh bocornya gas beracun yang mudah meledak.
Ledakan kedua terjadi pada percobaan penyelamatan pertama. Kala itu, tim penyelamat tengah melakukan pengeboran untuk menuju lokasi yang diyakini tempat para penambang terjebak. Robot berkamera juga telah dikirim ke lokasi. Tim mengatakan bahwa ledakan terjadi bukan karena aktivitas pengeboran, namun terjadi secara alami.
“Ledakan tersebut adalah peristiwa alami, itu bisa terjadi kapan saja,” ujar Knowles.
Dia mengatakan bahwa tim penyelamat telah menggunakan bor bermata berlian, sehingga tidak akan menimbulkan percikan api yang akan memicu ledakan.
Usaha penyelamatan para penambang tersebut dipandang pesimis. Tim penyelamat tidak yakin para penambang yang terjebak dua kilometer di dalam gunung masih hidup. Tidak ada bukti kehidupan sejak ledakan pertama.
Pada pengujian pertama, ditemukan pada terowongan kandungan karbonmonoksida dan methan dalam jumlah besar, sedangkan oksigen sedikit sekali. Karbonmonoksida adalah gas yang biasa dikeluarkan oleh knalpot kendaraan dan sangat beracun. Sedangkan methan adalah gas yang dapat memicu ledakan. Hal inilah yang menjadikan peluang hidup para pekerja tambang tipis sekali.
Insiden ini adalah yang terparah sejak 1896 di Selandia Baru dimana 65 penambang tewas akibat ledakan. Selandia Baru terkenal akan keselamatan pekerja tambangnya, dilaporkan dalam 114 tahun, hanya 181 pekerja yang tewas. (sj)
