Diberi nama Planet HIP 13044b, sebab dia mengelilingi HIP 13044, sebuah bintang tua yang sudah sekarat. Temuan baru ini dilansir Kamis, 18 November 2010. Dipublikasikan secara luas ke seluruh dunia hari ini.
Kisah tentang angkasa luar, temuan planet, dan sebagainya kerap kali membuat kita kagum. Kadang juga bingung. Sebab istilah dan kodenya begitu banyak. Agar cerita tentang planet baru itu mudah dipahami, ada baiknya kita buka kembali cerita para guru soal jagat raya ini.
Semenjak di bangku sekolah kita diajari bahwa dalam jagat raya ini terdapat sejumlah galaksi. Salah satunya adalah Milky Way, yang oleh kita lebih dikenal dengan sebutan Galaksi Bima Sakti. Dalam Bima Sakti itulah bumi yang kita huni ini dan sejumlah planet lain menetap.
Di luar itu masih banyak galaksi lain. Salah satunya adalah sebuah galaksi mini. Planet-planet di galaksi mini mengitari sebuah bintang induk bernama HIP 13044. Para ahli menghitung bahwa galaksi mini ini berjarak sekitar 2000 tahun cahaya dari bumi.
Tapi bintang induk itu kian renta. Daya gravitasi terhadap sejumlah planet yang mengitarinya kian lemah. Melemahnya daya gravitasi itu menyebabkan sejumlah planet terlepas dan disedot oleh daya gravitasi galaksi yang lain.
Satu dari sekian planet di sekitar bintang yang renta itu, ditarik oleh daya gravitasi Galaksi Bima Sakti. Daya tarik itu menyebabkan planet itu masuk ke dalam lingkungan Galaksi Bima Sakti. Proses penarikan itu juga kerap disebut sebagai "kanibalisme" galaksi. Sejumlah ahli menaksir bahwa proses kanibalisme itu terjadi 6 hingga 9 miliar tahun silam.
Planet yang masuk ke Bima Sakti itulah yang ditemukan sejumlah astronom di Jerman tadi. Lantaran dia berasal dari lingkungan HIP 13004, maka planet yang baru ditemukan itu diberi imbuhan b menjadi HIP 13004b. Planet ini menjadi "anak kost" di Galaksi Bima Sakti. Ukurannya, sedikit lebih besar dari Yupiter.
Apa pentingnya temuan planet baru itu buat kita?
Rainer Klement dari MPIA menuturkan bahwa temuan itu sangat menarik, sebab inilah pertama kalinya manusia menemukan adanya planet lain di luar galaksi kita. Temuan itu juga, lanjut Rainer, membuka jalan bagi para astronom untuk meneliti kelangsungan hidup galaksi Bima Sakti, juga kelangsungan hidup bumi yang kita huni ini.
Para ahli itu menghitung bahwa sekitar lima miliar tahun yang akan datang, Matahari juga perlahan akan redup. Dia akan memasuki fase "raksasa merah" yaitu fase di mana kekuatannya meredup dan daya grativitasinya melemah. Ketika daya gravitasi melemah itulah, planet-planet yang mengitarinya--termasuk bumi-- "dimangsa" oleh matahari atau disedot oleh gravitasi galaksi yang lain.
“Penemuan ini sangat menarik terutama ketika kita memahami masa depan tata surya, bahwa Matahari juga akan berubah menjadi 'raksasa merah' lima miliar tahun mendatang," kata pemimpin proyek, Johny Setiawan – astronom Indonesia yang juga bekerja di MPIA.
Lalu mengapa si HIP 13044b itu selamat dan tidak tertelan oleh planet induknya. Johny memperkirakan lantaran planet itu berotasi lebih cepat dari planet-planet yang lain. Namun dia tidak akan hidup selamanya, sebab bintang induk itu akan berkembang dalam tahap evolusi berikutnya. Saat itulah nanti-- miliaran tahun lagi-- planet ini tertelan.
Johny setiawan memperkirakan bahwa nanti, saat Matahari memasuki fase penuaan dan menjadi raksasa merah, Bumi mungkin tak akan selamat.
"Planet-planet dalam, termasuk Bumi, mungkin tidak akan bertahan hidup," kata Johny Setiawan pada SPACE.com. "Tapi Jupiter, Saturnus dan planet-planet luar mungkin pindah mendekat, persis seperti yang kami deteksi."
Namun, pada akhirnya semua akan binasa. Suatu ketika si Yupiter itu pun akan tertelan, sebagaimana nasib si HIP 13044b, yang karena datang dari antah berantah itu kemudian disebut planet "Alien".
Dipimpin Astronom Indonesia
Kita boleh berbangga karena tim penemu planet alien ini dipimpin astronom Indonesia, Johny Setiawan.Dr.rer.nat. Meski gemilang di luar negeri, tak banyak orang Indonesia yang tahu siapa dan sepak terjang sang astronom.
Pria kelahiran 16 Agustus 1974 ini bekerja di Max Planck Institute for Astronomy (MPIA), Jerman. Hebatnya, ia orang non-Jerman yang dipercaya berkali-kali sebagai ketua tim proyek.
Ia bergabung sebagai peneliti post-doctoral di MPIA, di Department of Planet and Star Formation sejak Juni 2003. Di tahun yang sama pula ia mulai memimpin penelitian di observasi bintang dan planet ESO La Silla. Selain itu, ia juga bekerja secara khusus di sejumlah projek seperti ESPRI (Pencarian Planet dengan PRIMA/ Phase-Referenced Imaging and Micro-arcsecond Astrometry).
Sebelum penemuan terbaru soal planet alien itu, Johny dan timnya menemukan sekitar 10 planet baru, meski tak semua dipublikasikan. Pada 2008, misalnya, ia dan timnya menemuka planet yang diberi nama TW Hya b. Planet tersebut mengelilingi bintang TW Hydrae itu berada di konstelasi Hydra yang berjarak 180 tahun cahaya dari Bumi.
Penemuan ini membuat kaget dunia astronomi. Sebab, dalam kurun waktu 12 tahun terakhir, tak satu pun planet yang muncul dari bintang muda.
Pada 2005 tim peneliti yang sama juga berhasil menemukan planet ekstrasolar lain yang diberi nama HD 11977 b yang juga memberikan informasi tentang evolusi dari sistem tata surya lain berkaitan dengan eksistensi planet jika bintang induk kehabisan sumber energi.
Sebagai asli Indonesia, Johny menguasai bahasa ibu, Bahasa Indonesia. Dan pergaulannya di Eropa membuat ia lancar berbahasa Jerman, Inggris, Spanyol, dan Prancis.
Selain bekerja di MPIA, Johny aktif memberikan ceramah soal astronomi, baik di Jerman maupun Indonesia.
Menurutnya, kegiatan sosial dan publik dalam komunitas ilmiah, dan hubungan antara akademisi, sains maupun non-sains sangat penting artinya untuk mentransfer ilmu pengetahuan dalam arah horisontal dan vertikal.
Selain kesibukan sebagai ilmuwan, Johny juga punya hobi memasak. Dia bisa memasak hampir semua jenis masakan tradisional Indonesia, yang kerap disajikan untuk kawan-kawannya sesama astronot.
